Point Broadband Bringing Fiber Internet to Macon County, AL

by

OPELIKA, ALA. – Thanks to funding from the Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs (ADECA), Point Broadband will soon expand its fiber network in east Alabama to reach underserved locations throughout Macon County.

Point Broadband and the Macon County Economic Development Authority (MCEDA) have collaborated to identify current and future development projects that must have fiber-based broadband connectivity to ensure that the sites are able to meet the needs of prospective clients, and in many cases, help Macon County compete with other areas in the final selection. The proposed project will include over 60 miles of new fiber throughout the county.

“Fiber is the unquestionable ‘gold standard’ of transport for digital connectivity world-wide, and Point Broadband is excited to bring this level of service to the residents, businesses, and public service locations in Macon.

County,” said David Ficken, Vice President of Strategic Growth at Point Broadband. “Customers will not only see an immediate benefit in their daily lives, but also, ADECA, community leaders, economic development champions, and the entire customer base can have ultimate confidence that this investment in infrastructure will serve any application well into the future.”

The company plans to construct a state-of-the-art, all-fiber network delivering symmetrical speeds up to 10 gigabits and robust voice service. Gig speeds provide faster downloads and uploads, enhanced video, real-time gaming and uninterrupted connections in multi-device homes. The company’s new network will give the residents and businesses of Macon County extra capacity to grow as new technology develops, and as an increasing number of in-home devices and business solutions require advanced Internet connectivity.

“This investment in local broadband infrastructure is being compared in importance to bringing electricity to the country, connecting communities through the interstate highway system or uniting the world through space and satellite-based technologies,” Ficken added.

More details will follow on Point Broadband’s expansion plan and the homes and businesses that will be the company’s service footprint.
